Biography

Prof. Chand currently teaches pharmacology and therapeutics to dental, dental hygiene, and nursing students at the University of Detroit Mercy, School of Dentistry. He participates in clinical teaching and chairside therapeutics for dental students. He also teaches in the Nurse Anesthesia and Physician assistant programs at the University of Detroit Mercy's McNichols campus. Prof. Chand earned his M.D. in Medicine from the Christian Medical College and Hospital (India) where he specialized in Clinical Pharmacology. Prof. Chand is director of Infection Control and Safety is responsible for infection control policies and their implementation in accordance with CDC guidelines.

Pain Management

Course Description:

Pain is the most common presenting symptom of a dental patient. The learner will receive an overview of different types of pain syndromes and best practice guidelines on the management of acute and chronic dental pain. Non-steroidal analgesics and Opioids will be discussed. The Opioid crisis in the United States will be discussed in detail.


Educational Objectives:
At the conclusion of the course participants will be able to:

  • Discuss common types of pain experienced by the dental patient

  • Understand how management of pain affects the quality of life of the dental patient.

  • Develop an awareness of misconceptions and consequences of untreated pain.

  • Identify reasons for the opioid crisis in the United States.

  • Discuss the pharmacology of narcotic and non-opioid analgesics.

  • Understand the role of the dental team in assessment and treatment of pain.

 

Infection Control and Prevention in Dentistry

Course Description:

The course will allow dental health care providers to be current with infection control and prevention protocols and guidelines. They will be advised on how to maintain a safe workplace environment and implement appropriate infection control measures in their practice.  They will also gain understanding of common transmissible and infectious diseases and gain insight into the appropriate immunizations to prevent such diseases.

 

Educational Objectives:
At the conclusion of the course participants will be able to:

  • Be current with infection prevention recommendations by CDC and OSHA

  • Implement effective infection control measures in their practice

  • Choose appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintain a safe workplace environment

  • Understand current vaccination recommendations for DHCPs

  • Understand current infectious diseases that may impact the dental practice
